What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a chronic medical condition which occurs when the lymphatic system is unable to function properly. This leads to the accumulation of lymphatic fluid in tissues.  This results in swelling and tissue enlargement, most commonly in the arms or legs.

The lymphatic system is an essential part of the body’s immune system. It is responsible for maintaining fluid balance and filtering out waste and toxins. When the lymphatic system is compromised or damaged, lymphatic fluid can accumulate in the tissues. This leads to the swelling and discomfort associated with lymphedema.

Causes?

Primary Lymphedema

Primary lymphedema is relatively rare and is caused by congenital malformations or abnormalities in the lymphatic system. It is often present at birth or develops during puberty.

Secondary Lymphedema

Secondary lymphedema is more common and occurs as a result of damage to the lymphatic system. It’s caused by various factors, including surgery, radiation therapy, infection, trauma, or other medical conditions that affect lymphatic flow. This can also develop after cancer treatment. Particularly for breast cancer or other cancers that require lymph node removal or radiation in the lymphatic drainage areas.

Comprehensive Assessment

Treatment depends on the severity and extent of the condition. Prevention and controlling the symptoms play an important role with this condition because there is no cure. If you have identified that you are suffering from lymphedema, early intervention and proper management can significantly improve your quality of life and reduce the risk of complications.

Your physical therapist will perform an initial assessment which will include questions about your current symptoms. Symptoms may include swelling, heaviness, pain, skin changes, and reduced range of motion. They will also need to assess the affected limb(s) noting the size, shape and temperature.

Treatment

Based on the findings from the assessment, your therapist can create an individualized treatment plan. This plan may include techniques such as manual lymphatic drainage, compression therapy, exercise programs, and self-care education to effectively manage lymphedema and improve the your overall well-being.

Physical therapists work closely with you and other members of your health care team to help control the swelling caused by lymphedema – to improve your daily functioning, reduce symptoms, and allow you to enjoy a better quality of life.
