Setting Goals Key Part of Therapy
At Comprehensive Rehab, goal setting is a key element of any treatment program.
Setting goals provides a foundation for our treatment programs. Our interdisciplinary approach allows us to provide a more holistic treatment program resulting in more integrated treatment results between therapies.
Together we establish the best plan for each individual and set goals to measure progress along the way.
Meaningful goals can motivate a patient, maximize outcomes, and mark milestones.
Our unique approach allows for treatment integration amongst multiple disciplines. Therapists collaborate regarding goals and treatment plans for each patient, allowing for maximum benefits from each therapy session.
As we help our patients heal and reach their functional goals, each patient’s treatment plan is customized to set goals that offer the best possible outcome in the environments that they must function in.
Think S.M.A.R.T.
When setting goals, it’s good to think S.M.A.R.T. (Specific. Measurable. Achievable. Realistic. Time Bound.)
Therapy goals are a combination of short-term and long-term aims. In the short-term are accomplishments a patient and therapist want to accomplish in a set session or short time period.
Long-term goals look further in the future as to what a patient can accomplish. Short-term goals often build toward a long-term goal.
Research has shown that many patients believe their role in therapy is to be a “passive participant.” However, when patients or their families are part of the goal-setting discussion, outcomes often are improved.
Patients can enter a therapy treatment with diverse values, believes, expectations and personalities. Goal setting allows both therapists and patients to work together to achieve results.
