From high school through the professional leagues, it’s common to see athletes wearing colorful kinesiology tape in various places on their bodies, but kinesiology tape isn’t just for athletes, and the physical therapists at Comprehensive Rehab can determine if taping is right for you.

What does kinesiology tape do?

Kinesio tape is a thin, flexible tape used to aid muscle movement. Kinesio tape, also known as “K-tape,” kinesiology tape aims to:

  • Provide support or stability to joints and muscles
  • Relieve or reduce pain
  • Reduce swelling
  • Decrease inflammation
  • Increase blood flow
  • Assist with postural correction
  • Assist with scar tissue management.

What is kinesiology taping?

Kinesiology taping is the application of kinesio tape to joints and muscles. Physical therapists can apply kinesiology tape to:

  • Ankles
  • Elbows
  • Heels
  • Knees
  • Lower back
  • Neck
  • Quads
  • Shoulders
  • Wrist

Kinesio tape can be applied in various positions and cut into differing shapes. At Comprehensive Rehab, our physical therapists can determine the best way to apply kinesiology tape to benefit each individual’s specific problem area.

Is kinesiology taping effective?

The effectiveness of kinesiology taping continues to be researched. Current theories suggest taping works because it increases circulation and can change muscle activation.

Some researchers believe the sensation of the tape on the skin is sent to the body’s central nervous system and overrides pain signals.

Universally, kinesiology taping is considered most useful when combined with other physical therapy treatment methods.

Is kinesiology taping only for athletes?

No! While kinesiology taping is most often associated with athletes, it can be beneficial to anyone suffering specific types of muscle or joint pain. Kinesio tape can stretch up to 40 percent of its original length while retaining its elasticity, which allows it to offer support without hindering body movement.

However, kinesiology tape isn’t for everyone. If you have an open wound, infection, or skin allergies, you should avoid kinesio tape. Professionals also recommend avoiding the tape if you have certain medical conditions including diabetes, stroke, deep vein thrombosis, or cancer.

Can you wear kinesiology tape every day?

There are limits to how long you should wear kinesiology tape. The tape typically can last 3 to 5 days on your skin, even with showering.

At Comprehensive Rehab, our physical therapists can apply Kinesio tape to ensure the tape is applied correctly for maximum benefit. If not applied correctly, the tape can cause blisters or tears on the skin.
